Tour Video Diary Part 2…

Holden Tour Blog: Thanks Greg for doing this so I can just reblog it instead of posting my own. I’ve been meaning to but I’ve just been so busy sleeping and watching LOST and stuff.

weird syndromes.

bessblog:

I googled weird syndromes and here’s a few awesome ones that I found. I particularly like “Sick Santa Syndrome”.

  • Air controllers syndrome: Peptic ulcers occurring among air traffic controllers, as a result of job stress. (Illinois Medical Journal, 1972)
  • Creditcarditis: Pain over the rear and down thigh due to pressure on nerve from a wallet stuffed with credit cards.
    (New England Medical Journal, 1966)
  • Ice-cream frostbite: Frostbite on the lips from prolonged contact with ice-cream. (New England Medical Journal, 1982)
  • Money counters’ cramp: Painful seizure of muscles from counting too much cash. (English University Press, 1975)
  • Nun’s knee: Swelling of kneecap from repeated kneeling in prayer. (Diseases of Occupations, 1975)
  • Sick Santa’s syndrome: Low back pain from lifting heavy children and parcels and acquired illnesses from multiple contact with kids. (JAMA, 1986)
  • Television legs: Loss of normal flexibility of the legs from being slumped in a chair in front of the box for too long. (JAMA, 1958)

This post reminded me of a book I love/hate: The Hypochondriac’s Pocket Guide to Horrible Diseases You Probably Already Have.

a) Don’t Google images of cornu cutaneum.

b) I may start blaming things on Alien hand syndrome (anarchic hand or Dr. Strangelove syndrome): an unusual neurological disorder in which one of the sufferer’s hands seems to take on a mind of its own. Alien hands can perform complex acts such as undoing buttons, removing clothing, and manipulating tools.

Tongue Twister

Correction:

One smart fellow, he felt smart.
Two smart fellows, they felt smart.
Three smart fellows, they all felt smart.

(It’s ‘fellow,’ not ‘man’!!!)

  • Johnny: Your booty.
  • Dan: Aw, yeah. Mansquad.

My Favo(u)rite Tour Things

This post is inspired by the 30 Rock episode “Believe In the Stars” where Liz Lemon meets ‘Oprah’ plus a long bus ride from Brooklyn to Toronto.

(I added the optional “u” in “Favorite” in honor of the 2 Brits on our bus.)

1. Natural Shredded Rubber Travel Pillow - This is how I bring ‘home’ with me. It’s small, squishy, hypoallergenic & dust mite resistant. No more weird hotel pillows.

2. Downy Wrinkle Releaser - This is no replacement for my Travel Steamer but I cannot live without this stuff on tour. And I always end up sharing because it actually works. I bought a big bottle for the bus!

3. Tarte Eyelash Curler - You don’t need much makeup when you curl your eyelashes. (Opens your eyes & helps you to look awake, even when you aren’t.) This one is the best I’ve found (thank you, IM) and even people who are frightened by this device will find it easy to maneuver.

4. Foam Roller - I don’t know if it is possible for me to express how much a 36-inch cylinder made of dense foam changed my life. As far as I’m concerned everyone should own one of these and if you’re near me when I have it out, get ready for the best stretch-massage-balancing-5-minutes of your day. And if you drive a car, sit hunched at a computer or around a guitar all day, rolling your back out feels like a dream. Okay, enough. I think you get the idea. (But really, worth every dollar.)

5. Double Wall Insulated Tumbler Mug - I don’t own this exact one, but any mug that is double-walled gets my vote. Keeps coffee hot for (literally) hours or an iced beverage from “sweating” (ew). Plus it’s better than wasting paper cups!

6. Renaissance Guitars Compass Rose Ukulele - I love my custom-made uke. It’s perfect for writing on in small corners of stairwells and is easy to play in the car on long rides.

7. Humangear GoToobs - So far these are the best reusable travel containers I’ve found. No leakage and you can use up every last drop of lotion/face wash/conditioner.

8. The Old Fashioned - My new favorite cocktail. Thank you, Don Draper.

9. Eagle Creek Pack-It Folder - Even if you start with an organized suitcase, 3 days into tour you’ll likely be rummaging to the bottom of your bag to find that shirt you KNOW you packed. But this thing works like a big envelope to keep all your blouses folded neatly.

10. Canon G10 - I bought this on Deborah Lopez’s recommendation and it basically takes beautiful photographs for me.

11. iPod shuffle - Every hotel gym is different, but my playlists stay the same.

12. Moroccan Oil - I don’t think anyone will disagree with me when I say that Jessie Baylin has the best hair on the planet. She introduced me to this amazing product on the Hotel Cafe Tour last year and I’ve used it ever since. It’s wonderful for reviving 2nd or 3rd day hair or for a deep conditioning treatment.

13. Pink Plaid - For some reason, I’m really into pink plaid. I already have pajama pants, 90’s-style oversize buttondown, and cute scarf. I’m sure there will be a day on this tour where I look like my shirt threw up on my neck, but I don’t care.

Ok, off to pour myself a whiskey (no ice or knives or muddler on the bus yet) & watch True Blood or LOST with the rest of the touring crew.

In response to Ian Axel’s Tumblr Post : I have no recollection of waking in the middle of the night, turning on my computer, opening Garageband and recording this. Fun times.
